Will BookBook automatically turn the iPad off when closed?

No, the BookBook for iPad does not have a magnet.  The magnet-based Smart Covers connect directly to the glass and they stay in place via the magnet. Our BookBook’s inside cover rests against the interior frame - not even touching the glass. And although we could have put a bumped-out magnet in BookBook, the risk was that the cover could easily separate from the screen, inadvertently turning the iPad ON and running the battery down.

In addition, the iPad has a nifty little feature in the Settings that allows the user to designate a certain number of minutes of inactivity, after which time the iPad automatically shuts down to conserve battery life.  So although a magnet is, admittedly, comforting, it is also a bit redundant.
